How to Connect a TV With the Internet

If you have a smart TV and need to connect it to the internet, you can do so in several ways. The best way depends on your network setup and the type of devices you own.
Wireless networks
Wi-Fi connections are the easiest and most reliable way to access the internet on a smart TV. To use this method, you need to ensure your router is on and that your device has a Wi-Fi compatible USB or Ethernet adapter. The steps to set up a wireless network vary depending on the brand of smart TV you have, so consult the user guide or customer support for more information.
Gaming consoles
Blu-ray players and video game consoles from the last decade (like PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) come with built-in wireless capabilities, which make them easy to connect to the internet. These systems also let you download and stream movies, music, and other content from popular services like Netflix and Hulu.
You can also use your console as a media player by plugging in your media box/streaming device through the HDMI port. Some media boxes/streaming devices also come with their own preprogrammed apps and channels that can be accessed via the Wi-Fi, so they are an all-in-one solution for streaming from your home.
Using a wired connection
While wireless connections have improved a lot in recent years, wired connections still give you faster speeds and more stable connections. To use a wired connection, you need to connect one end of an Ethernet cord to your router and the other end to the jack on your TV.
Streaming sticks and devices such as Roku, Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV Stick, and Apple TV are great choices for this method. All of these devices are easy to connect to your Wi-Fi, and most even walk you through the setup process.
A media box or streaming device is an excellent choice if you want to watch live TV through your device and also use it as a Freeview box. Some have built-in preprogrammed apps and channels that can easily be accessed from the WiFi, so you can enjoy your favourite programs in full screen.
Some streaming devices also support mirroring. This means that you can watch your smartphone or computer screen on your TV, and others let you mirror your laptop or desktop screens so you can share what’s on them with the rest of your family.
Powerline Adapters
A powerline kit allows you to connect your TV to the powerline – the same as your broadband router. However, if you live in a large house or property where there are different mains electrical circuits, this may not be possible. Alternatively, you can use the WPS function on your broadband router to create a connection between your TV and your router instead of plugging in your Powerline Adapter.
There are many pros & cons to these methods so you need to choose which is right for you. If you decide on Powerline Adapters, be sure to check the make & model of your kit so you get one that will work in your home.
