Connecting a Transformer for LEDs

A transformer can be used to connect multiple single-colour or white / single-colour LED strips together, as long as the total wattage of each strip matches the wattage output of the LED transformer. You’ll need a connector-block for this purpose, which you can get from any electrical supplier. You’ll need to wire the starter-lead (+ve and -ve) of each strip to the connector-block’s input terminals, and the output terminals to each of the outputs of the connector-block.

If you’re planning to run more than two white / single-colour LED strips, it is advisable to purchase a multi-output connector-block with more than one output. It will save you money, because you won’t have to buy several different power supplies for each strip.

When selecting a transformer for your project, be sure to choose one that is IP rated to protect your LEDs from water and dust. It should be able to withstand high temperature spikes, such as from power surges caused by thunderstorms. A higher rating will also help your transformer last longer, as it’s less likely to overheat.
